130 breast cancer cases recorded annually At least 130 breast cancer cases are recorded every year in Fiji.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar while officiating at the Pinktober Awareness said at least 60 breast cancer surgeries are recorded annually.

Akbar said  the statistics are concerning as it makes breast cancer the most common form of cancer among Fijian women as they make up 98 per cent of breast cancer patients.

“Early detection of breast cancer in women is important for the effective management of the disease. There is no current treatment to prevent breast cancer,” she said.

“Early detection of the disease can lead to an excellent outcome. If you reach the hospital when half of your breast is rotten, that’s sad, and it is the reality.

“This is exactly why women need to pay attention to themselves first as most women overlook and ignore what their bodies are trying to tell them.

“They prioritise everyone and everything else, except themselves.  This is why families also have to look out for the well-being of their mothers, wives and daughters as well,” she said.

She said early detection methods for breast cancer include screening mammography, a clinical breast examination by a trained health professional, and breast awareness.
