Keep night clubs closed: Gavoka There is a call for the government to tread carefully on the opening of pubs and nightclubs in the aftermath of the COVID19 pandemic.

Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Viliame Gavoka said although the coronavirus infection rate has reduced to a containable level, the virus is still deadly.

Gavoka in a statement said adhering to the coronavirus guidelines and protocols under the influence of alcohol can be very difficult.

“The pubs and nightclubs could become the super spreader outlets for the possible third wave of coronavirus in Fiji,” he said.

“Such outcomes can be catastrophic to the tourism industry that is enjoying very healthy forward bookings, now that the borders are opened.

“It can also affect the return on investment from Fiji Airways that holds half-billion dollars in government guarantees,” he said.

He said that lately, countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have experienced an upsurge in local transmissions when they opened their nightclubs and entertainments, causing serious concern.

He said the government need to seriously consider limiting public entertainment where alcohol is consumed, for the preservation of the fragile tourism industry and job security.
