Law allows change in voter card: Saneem Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem says sections 19 D of the Electoral Registration of Voters Act allow the Fijian Elections Office to expire a voter card.

Saneem said the Fijian Elections Office expire a voter card to allow them to upgrade the security feature or the information contained in the card.

He said the green voter cards presently in use have expired, in order to get the new blue coloured cards, every Fijian would have to produce their birth certificate.

“We know that there are some certain people asking questions regarding the validity of the blue and green card. The green card has expired,” he said.

“I understand a politician is questioning where the expiry date of the voter registration card is. I would like to refer that person to sections 19 D of the Electoral Registration of Voters Act.

“This section of the act allows us to expire a voter card so we can upgrade the security feature or the information contained in the card.

“If you look at the green and blue card, one of the major differences that you will see apart from colour is the polling venue of the voter is written card,” he said.

He said it was announced before the last general elections that the blue card would expire before the 2022 general elections.

“Now this is the most critical information in a system like Fiji where the electoral system requires you to vote where you are assigned.

“If you read the Electoral Commission 2018 report there was a recommendation for the voter card to also have details of where you to vote in the next general elections,” Saneem said.

Saneem said no one will stop the public to take their green card to cast their vote in the 2022 general elections but it is no longer a valid identification card.
