No need for large COP26 delegation: Narube

No need for large COP26 delegation: Narube Unity Fiji Party Leader Savenaca Narube says the Government’s decision to send a large delegation to COP26 is yet another clear signal that  it does not care for the people as many families cannot even afford enough food to feed their families.

He claims the Government will be sending more than 20 representatives to the meeting in Glasgow, Scotland next Thursday.

Narube said this number is exorbitant, unnecessary, and extremely insensitive when many families are suffering.

“The cost of the entire delegation would include airfares (some travel First Class), per diems, quarantine costs and other allowances,” he said.

“Therefore, in my calculation, that bill would be over $1 million of which half would be for daily allowances. This is a signal that they don’t care about the people of Fiji.

“It is not too difficult to calculate how far $1 million would go to support the hundreds of thousands of people who have lost jobs

“Even if the donors are footing the bill, surely, the money could be better used to mitigate climate change in Fiji,” he said.

He said there is no doubt that the development partners and donors will be asked to support this needless extravagance.
