Reservation of party name received: SOE Registrar of Political Parties Mohammed Saneem has confirmed in receiving one other application for reservation of name for a proposed party leading up to Fiji’s 2022 elections.

Saneem has refused to divulge any further information to the media on whether they are new entrants to Fiji’s political landscape or seasoned politicians making their return.

He in an exclusive interview with FijiLive said some proposed political parties do not follow through with their applications.

“The total number of registered parties in Fiji currently stands at eight which includes People Alliance the newly registered party,” he said.

“Three political parties planning to merge for the general elections in 2022 shows that there is a lot of freedom for parties to associate and disassociate with each other.

“The three political parties planning to merge for the general elections in 2022 need to ensure they are in compliance with their constitution, read it.

“I can confirm that we have received one other application for reservation of name for a proposed party. Some do not follow through with their applications,” he said.

He said the only new party registered since the last election in 2018 is former Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s People’s Alliance Party that was registered last month.
