Schools won’t shutdown: Kumar Minister for Education Premila Kumar has confirmed the ministry will not shut down a school if any of its students or teachers test positive for coronavirus.

Kumar while speaking to teachers and staff of Baulevu High School said some schools overseas had recorded coronavirus cases when classes resumed.

She said students and teachers who test positive for coronavirus will be isolated, schools will not shut down for 14 or 28 days.

“Most must have heard of overseas cases when there was a number of cases recorded when school reopened, but then again, what is the protocol around that,” she said.

“It does not mean when a positive case is reported in the school, the school will be shut down for 14 days or 28 days.

“Our discussions with the health ministry were simple. We will isolate after testing students or school teachers who may have coronavirus,” she said.

She said classes for years 12 and 13 will resume on 4th January 2022 after the Christmas and New Year break.

“The school term for years 12 and 13 is from November 1 to January 28. The Christmas and New Year break will be from December 23 to January 3,” she said.

“This timing given is based on the assumption that there will be no cyclones given that senior secondary school students will resume classes during our cyclone season.

“We will make the necessary adjustments to the proposed school terms for years 12 and 13 if we get hit by another cyclone or any climate change,” she said.

She said examinations for years 12 and 13 are expected to start on January 17 which will be over two weeks and the result is expected to be out by mid-March.
