10 nurses to attain Masters degree Ten nurses will be graduating with a Masters degree in emergency nursing next year.

Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said this year, nurses were able to enroll in local postgraduate acute care programme in emergency nursing at the Fiji National University.

Dr Waqainabete said he hopes to see in the near future, the establishment of master courses in other critical areas of nursing disciplines in Fiji and the region.

“In the 2017/2018 budget, Government gazetted 800 nursing specialist positions. These will be 320 midwives and 52 nurse practitioners,” he said.

“This meant the development of new career pathways for nurses to enable those who wish to pursue this career pathway to become clinical nurse specialists.

“It also saw nurses upgrading their educational levels and standards for nursing specialization, which is important for the development and advancement of health care in Fiji.

“I will continue to push for better nursing standards because you are at the frontline of any response to major incidents and exposed to high levels of risk,” he said.

He said Fiji is leading the way in developing nurse specialisation which is crucial for improving the quality of health services, health outcomes and access to universal health coverage.
