Access to climate funds is low: Narube Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube says Fiji’s access to climate funds is one of the lowest in the region.

Narube said he believes that one of the reasons is that Fiji fails to satisfy fiduciary requirements of access to these funds.

In an exclusive interview with Fiji Live today, Narube said for the countries to have access to the climate fund there is a requirement for accountability and good governance.

“Climate change is an important issue for Fiji, the country is feeling the impact of it in rising sea levels and the increasing number of cyclones,” he said.

“We believe that the battle against climate change must begin at home. Government must follow what it says on climate change.

“We have seen so many projects that have been approved by the Government that do not protect our environment, the Malolo project is a classic example

“Fiji’s access to global climate funds is one of the lowest in the region. We believe that one of the reasons is that Fiji fails to satisfy fiduciary requirements of access to these funds,” Narube said.

Narube said rather than sending a large delegation to COP 26, the government should have used the $2 million funds on climate change projects.
