Coronavirus safe measures ignored: Fong Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong is concerned with the coronavirus safe measures being increasingly ignored by the public during this festive season.

Dr Fong said the ministry sees that coronavirus safe measures in public indoor spaces, public transports and organised outdoor gatherings are now being increasingly flouted and ignored.

Dr Fong in a statement said poor compliance to coronavirus safe measures is now more clearly visible in major businesses facilities.

We do expect the third wave of cases because of excessive gatherings that are going to happen over Christmas and New Year,” he said.

“We continue to prepare to have the wave of severe cases in hospitals as the public continues to ignore the coronavirus safe measures in place.

“The public of Fiji needs to embrace society-wide promotion and compliance with coronavirus safe measures to ensure the third wave are small; a wave we learn to live with and learn from.

“Whilst the easing of restrictions is needed to facilitate social and economic livelihood, the public must ensure that we continue to observe our safe coronavirus measures,” he said.

He said the public should avoid contained and crowded spaces to avoid the risk of increased spread of the virus.
