Less qualified teachers in ECE: Jokhan

Less qualified teachers in ECE: Jokhan Education Minister Premila Kumar is encouraging students to consider taking up primary and early childhood education because of the low number of qualified teachers in the country.

Kumar in an exclusive interview with FijiLive said the ministry was recruiting teachers for early childhood education and primary.

She said it was worrying that the number of applications received from qualified primary and early childhood education teachers remain low.

“While numerous applications are being received from qualified secondary teachers, the number of applications received from these two areas was low,” she said.

“Students who will be progressing to tertiary level next year need to consider taking up studies in primary and early childhood education.

“It was important for students to take interest in this area as the ministry needs to employ qualified teachers in these crucial areas,” she said.

She said parents need to spend time with children to guide them on the right path when it comes to their teaching career so that they choose the area where they become marketable.
