Parents urged to get children vaccinated The Health Ministry is calling on parents whose children have turned one but have not received their measles vaccine to do so at the earliest opportunity.

The Ministry highlighted this after confirming two cases of measles in separate villages in the Serua-Namosi medical sub-division today

The Ministry in a statement said all children aged six months to 11 years in the Serua-Namosi Medical sub-division will receive one dose of measles vaccine and two drops of polio.

“All children around Fiji who have turned one and are yet to receive their measles vaccine are encouraged to turn up to the nearest health facility for their vaccination.”

“Measles is a highly contagious, serious, airborne disease caused by the measles virus, and spread through air droplets as well as by direct contact.

“The virus infects the respiratory tract and spread throughout the body. The symptoms of measles are high fever, runny nose, cough, red and water eyes.

“After several days a rash erupts usually on the face and upper neck, within three days it spreads reaching the hands and feet lasting for five to six days.”

The Ministry said any individual presenting with the above signs and symptoms is requested to visit the nearest health facility for immediate attention and treatment.
