38 children in Fiji have AIDS

Dec 01, 2021 05:00:29 PM

Fiji currently has 506 cases of HIV/AIDS of which include 38 children.

As per the Global AIDS Monitoring Report, Fiji is in the top 5 countries of rising new HIV infections in the Asia Pacific region amongst the 15 to 24-year-old age group with an increasing rate of over 50% since 2010 (our youth).

Today marks World AIDs Day and the Ministry of Youth and Sports is urging people to raise awareness and help put an end to this disease.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is when HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is left untreated and people can get HIV from contact with infected blood, semen, or vaginal fluids.

Most people get the virus by having unprotected sex with someone who has HIV - another common way of getting it is by sharing drug/tattoo needles with someone who is infected with HIV.
