African COVID cases in Fiji: MOH

African COVID cases in Fiji: MOH Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong has confirmed that there are coronavirus-positive travellers in quarantine from states in Africa.

Dr Fong said these travellers arrived in the country before the Government knew about the new variant of coronavirus, Omicron.

He said these travellers have been quarantined in line with the stringent measures they have applied to countries they consider a red zone for ongoing viral spread.

“If transmissible enough, stringent border measures will only delay the inevitable entry and spread of current and future variants of the coronavirus.

“Fiji citizens will only be safe if we remain coronavirus safe with two-meter physical distancing, and do carrying a mask when you are out of your home.

“They should also wear masks properly in public indoor spaces, public service vehicles, and outdoor crowded spaces.

“They should also open windows to improve ventilation, avoid poorly ventilated, crowded space and get vaccinated when it’s your turn,” he said.

He said their swab tests will be forwarded this week overseas for genetic sequencing.
