Draft policy on industrial hemp in place Agriculture Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy has confirmed that a draft policy paper on industrial hemp is in place.

Reddy said a series of public consultations have been undertaken with the guidance of the agriculture ministry’s research officers to draft a policy paper on industrial hemp.

He said work has already commenced by the ministry on the possibility of growing industrial hemp as an alternative form of agricultural produce, not marijuana.

“The focus is on an industrial hemp with low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol that are used for medicinal purposes, manufacturing of fabric, paper, oil,” he said.

“A draft policy paper is in place and a series of public consultations have been undertaken with the guidance of our research officers.

“To further address the legal issues, the upcoming Attorney-General’s Conference has a dedicated session on the Industrial Hemp Bill.

“During the conference, there will be a number of lawyers, legal officers and the permanent secretary for agriculture speaking on industrial hemp,” he said.

He said the ministry is certain that the industrial hemp bill will provide guidance on the processes to be considered for cultivating industrial hemp in Fiji.
