Over $240m spent on rebuilding of schools Education Minister Premila Kumar has revealed that the Government has invested in excess of $240 million in rebuilding and repairing schools damaged by cyclones.

Kumar in her contribution to the debate on the President's address in Parliament said the FijiFirst Government has been relentlessly making continuous investments in building a resilient nation.

She said amongst many other things that the Government is doing, it has channelled significant funds towards improving schools for the benefit of the students.

“I am pleased to inform that most schools have been completed of which one has already been commissioned by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama last Friday,” she said.

“I thank our development partners for coming on board and helping with the Government’s initiative. The vision of transforming Fiji has education at its heart.

“With the commitment to improve quality of life by giving equal opportunities to all Fijians, the FijiFirst Government introduced reforms in the education sector to benefit parents.

“Free education grants have been provided, infrastructures of schools have been improved and schools are resourced with items such as computers, library books and charts, “ she said.

She said by building back better and with cyclone resilience in mind, students will have less disruption to schooling which in turn will reduce learning loss.

She said most schools that were damaged by tropical cyclones since 2016 will be commissioned before the new school year start.
