Project money diverted to disaster relief: Koya Some Government projects remain incomplete as money had to be redirected to people that were impacted by natural disasters, says Minister for Trade Faiyaz Koya.

Koya said the Opposition speaks of unfinished projects, but they have always left out important facts, such as the many severe and destructive cyclones that Fiji has faced since 2016.

He said cyclone Winston devastated lives and livelihoods, which meant redirection of funds to support those who needed it most.

“Following these ferocities, we are facing the biggest global phenomena coronavirus. If a household’s income is reduced by 50 percent, their expenses reduce,” he said.

“Similarly, income for this household called Government is earned mainly through collection of taxes and tariffs.

“When there are global shocks, such as coronavirus, there are repercussions that everyone faces.

“It’s the same when an industry that earns 40percent of the income for the household comes to a dead stop,” Koya said.

However, Koya said the government has still been able to continue to provide support for education and empower Fijians.
