Govt failed to prepare: Chaudhry Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry claims Government has once again failed to prepare for emergencies caused by natural disasters.

Chaudhry said the National Disaster Management Office should have prepared well for the disaster as warnings of heavy flood had been issued by the weather office.

He said the relevant authorities should have made sure that food packs, bottled water, medicines and other essentials are ready for immediate dispatch to affected areas.

“Government should announce its relief and rehabilitation package as soon as possible and not spend weeks on assessment surveys, as in the past,” he said.

“I have received reports from all over the west that people were still waiting for relief some six days after the massive flooding brought in by Cyclone Cody.

“Families in Lovu suffered severe flood damage to their homes, they have not received food packs from the government. Nor do they have water to clean up their flooded homes.

“Nasolo village in Ba was also inundated with floodwaters, face similar problems. Those in evacuation centres were told to go back and clean their homes,” he said.

He said Government should step up its relief operations to assist families affected by the recent severe flooding in various parts of the country.
