NZ Churches assist 650 cyclone-hit families The Streams Community Church, a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of New Zealand, and various Fijian Churches in Auckland have collaborated with Sai Prema Foundation Fiji to assist 650 families affected by the recent Cyclone Cody with grocery ration packs.

The effort led by Reverend Atu Lagi in Auckland was initially in response to the devastating effects of COVID-19 upon the families in Fiji.

However, the timing of the shipment of grocery items from New Zealand to Fiji has shifted the focus to assisting families who have been severely impacted by Cyclone Cody.

"As a community of churches from Auckland New Zealand, we made a commitment to pray for our beloved Fiji when we received news of the spike of COVID-19. After the 4 months of the global prayer for Fiji, we made a commitment to put our faith into action and respond to the request to provide food boxes to assist families in need” said Rev. Atu Lagi.

He stated that the Church were very grateful to be part of this initiative and that they were very happy to be teaming up with Sai Prema Foundation Fiji to serve the people of Fiji.

“It has been a privilege working with Sai Prema Foundation and we look forward to the future by supporting more of their community service initiatives to serve the people of Fiji” he said.

Sai Prema Foundation Director Sumeet Tappoo said that the Foundation was very grateful to Reverend Atu Lagi and the community of churches from Auckland for their generosity.

“It is truly heart-warming to see the love and care from our brothers and sisters in New Zealand we are truly grateful for their assistance for the people of Fiji.”

150 families will be assisted through the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and the remaining 500 families will be assisted through the Foundation’s national distribution network and collaborative partners based across a number of towns and locations around Fiji.
