Rubbish causes floods: Kumar The Local Government Minister Premila Kumar has called on the public to refrain from dumping rubbish in the drain.

During her visit to Ba Muslim Primary School, Kumar said some settlements and low lying areas get flooded because people throw garbage in the drain.

She said rubbish in drains can then cause stagnant water to become a health issue for breeding mosquitoes.

“It is the responsibility of the general public not to dispose household rubbish or green waste into the roadside drains,” she said.

“We are urging the public to please be more responsible and do not dump rubbish on the roads and the drains, and show common respect and courtesy for their communities.

“Rubbish contributes to the blockage of drains which led to the flooding of the road stretch. A lot of drains are not cleaned and the water does not flow to the outlets properly,” she said.

She said people need to take ownership and manage their roadside drain frontages responsibly to avoid blocking drains.
