Schools remain closed: MOE Education Minister Premila Kumar says they cannot open schools during this time is because floodwaters are affecting classrooms and roads that lead to schools.

Kumar said schools will need rigorous cleaning and decontaminating before it is safe to welcome the children back.

She said children’s education is their priority, but matters beyond their control are causing the children to be out of school.

“The teams in flood-affected schools are trying to clean the classrooms to ensure students can safely return to school,” she said.

“There is a lot of work underway behind the scenes. The district officers are working with the heads of schools to make the school environment safer.

“We have emphasized that schools need to have a school maintenance plan together with a risk management plan. The schools are learning and are implementing their risk management plan.

“We have learned a lot after Cyclone Winston when some heads of schools did not ensure that school resources were kept properly,” Kumar said.

Kumar said their operation team are cleaning up and organising the school once the waters subside.
