Shameful, says Gavoka

Shameful, says Gavoka Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Viliame Gavoka has labelled reports of a cut-out water tank used to transport a pregnant woman to a hospital as shameful.

In a statement, Gavoka said pictures of the woman being carted across flood-waters in Rakiraki over the weekend shows the lack of resources to be able to respond to emergencies for first responders.

He said the Bainimarama Government has proudly committed Fiji to being climate change champions but has been woeful in preparing the country to be climate change safe.

“We have questioned the need to purchase ten Republic of Fiji Military Forces refurbished bushmasters’ that cost us nearly $8 million in 2017,” he said.

“This was to provide mobility and protection of our troops. Most of these are found running on our roads, serving no useful purpose, except terrifying the citizenry.

“Disasters have been unrelenting for the last 15 years and there is a need to provide suitable mobile equipment for the Police and National Fire Officers.

“This is to carry out their tasks for the safety of our people during emergencies. This is a need to provide assistance to our people during disasters,” he said.

He said most of the community halls being used as evacuation centres are not certified as sound by structural engineers.

He said there was a need for the Government to strengthen community halls to withstand category five cyclones.
