Volcanic ash doesn’t affect water: WAF Water Authority of Fiji says the ash from the volcanic eruption in Tonga on Saturday does not affect the water received in the taps.

The Water Authority of Fiji said the recent volcanic eruption that took place in Tonga over the weekend, lead to volcanic ash being present in the atmosphere, which can cause acid rain.

In a statement, the authority said this does not affect the water received in the taps as this water goes through rigorous processing at the water treatment plants.

“The pH levels of water are carefully adjusted to ensure that any changes caused to the water is taken care of and the water is safe for human consumption.”

“Customers who have their water supplied through the rural and rainwater harvesting schemes are strongly advised to carefully cover their drinking water sources.”

The authority said the public is to cover their drinking water sources because such systems do not go through the water treatment processes offered by the water treatment plants.
