Hurley accorded a traditional welcome Australia’s Commonwealth governor general David Hurley was accorded a traditional welcome at the Grand Pacific Hotel, today.

In his address, Hurley said it was a pleasure for him to visit Fiji at a time when bilateral relationships between the two countries were strong.

He said for him to receive an invitation from the residencies for a state visit further underscores the state of the relationship between the two countries and its enduring nature.

“I am delighted to be in Fiji. For me, it's been a long time coming. My last time here was over 20 years ago and this is Linda’s first trip to your delightful country,” he said.

“I want to thank your excellences for your warm welcome, and to all those involved in this magnificent traditional ceremony.

“So it's a pleasure for me to be visiting Fiji at a time when our bilateral relationship is such is in such a strong condition.

“It's refreshing to be able to travel again after some difficult times during the pandemic when borders were closed, and contact between peoples was so much harder.

“The planes are once more in the air, airports are busy and people are getting on with their lives. Our visit represents a meeting between friends, partners and vuvale,” he said.

He said in the coming days, he looks forward to seeing how Australians and Fijians are working together for the betterment of our two countries.
