No acute hepatitis recorded in Fiji: MOH

No acute hepatitis recorded in Fiji: MOH Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong has confirmed that Fiji has no reports of acute hepatitis cases.

Dr Fong said the ministry has been monitoring reports of acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children in multiple countries including the United Kingdoms and the United States of America.

In a statement, Dr Fong said according to the World Health Organisation, there have been 169 cases as of last Thursday in 11 countries.

“We understand that studies into the cause of this illness in children are ongoing, and we continue to monitor reports by the World Health Organisation,” he said.

“Acute hepatitis is referred to as an inflammation of the liver. It most commonly is associated with viral hepatitis but can be seen with bacterial and fungal infections and with medications

“The ministry is monitoring reports of acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children in multiple countries including the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Spain, Israel and France.

“From the statistics released by the World Health Organisation, 169 cases of acute hepatitis has been recorded in eleven countries as of last week Thursday,” he said.

He said the ministry has alerted children's doctors around the country regarding the disease.
