Govt has made a mockery of themselves: Narube

Govt has made a mockery of themselves: Narube Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube says the government had made a mockery of themselves after Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama stated that they do not control the increase in world prices.

Narube said Bainimarama had also stated in Parliament that Fiji must protect itself from these increases but he did not say how, maybe because he did not know-how.

He said the people that suffer the most when prices soar are the poor.

“His Minister for the Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had said the same thing; blame the world prices. Rhetorics like these makes a mockery of the role of government in protecting the people," he said.

“It is not enough just to tell us the obvious. The people that suffer the most when prices soar are the poor. So, what can the Government do to ease the pain of the poor people?

“They have reduced value-added tax to zero on basic food items. Can they add more to this list? Can the Government introduce temporary price controls only for this time?

“Can they look more to companies to share the load by tightening profits? Can we manage the exchange rate to help cushion the higher world prices? Can we consider subsidies?

“The opposition did not fire back with these options. Perhaps their guns were out of bullets. Government is going to stand idly by and allow the full pass-through of these higher prices.

“The worst is therefore still to come. Poverty will rise further. It seems that the government is going to stand and watch the poor people suffer more,” he said.

Narube said the simple answer is that the government is empty of solutions, their wrong decisions in the past continue to haunt the people of Fiji.
