Pilot training costs have increased: Faktaufon

Pilot training costs have increased: Faktaufon Costs of recurring training for pilots in the region have increased in the last two years due to the limitation of the resources where Pacific Island countries can get them trained.

This was highlighted by the Association of the South Pacific Airlines chief executive George Faktaufon in a panel discussion.

Faktaufon said Air Calédonie sent ten of their pilots to Paris to be trained on the simulators for the ATR because Melbourne and Christchurch were closed.

“The problem for us is that it not only involves getting our staff up-to-date but also the cost of training our technical staff particularly pilots,” he said.

“To train our pilots, every six months they have to go through civil aviation training.  Costs of recurring training for pilots in the region have increased in the last two years.

“In the process, it cost them USD$220,000 dollars to train, that’s the cost of airfares alone plus the cost of simulators time.

“So these are the kinds of costs that the airlines are facing and will continue to face as we prepare for the reopening of borders,” he said.

He said only nine South Pacific Tourism Organisations have at least a targeted date for reopening.
