Remove regulations that undermine rights

Party leader Savenaca Narube said these would include the review of the Public Orders Act, the Media Act and the Trade Unions Decrees. Narube said a Unity Fiji government would initiate the process to review the imposed 2013 Constitution to specify, the conditions that other laws could limit the rights in the Constitution. “Government has the most shameful human rights record in our modern history. The US State Department Human Rights Report is full of the violations of human rights in Fiji,” he said. “The Bill of Rights in the imposed 2013 Constitution is seriously undermined by Section six (five) which states that these rights may be limited by laws. “It does not even spell out the necessary conditions of these limitations. The government has abused these clauses to limit our human rights through the Public Order Act and Media Act. “We will ensure that people are given their freedom to personal security, free and fair election and the right of civil servants to a decent working environment,” he said. He said safeguarding human rights boils down to leadership that cares for the people which is enshrined in Unity Fiji’s motto of “People First.” By Nacanieli Tuilevuka
