Rights come with responsibilities: Nair Deputy Commissioner of Police Itendra Nair says a person’s rights come with responsibilities.

Speaking at a workshop organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC),  Nair said Police officers can detain any individual if he or she has breached the law of the country.

He said Police officers have every right to detain or arrest a person for breaching the law as they are empowered by the law to carry out their duties.

“Police have a very challenging role in all societies. We are empowered by law to arrest, search, seizure, detention as well as use of reasonable force,” he said.

“These duties are being carried out to ensure there is rule of law, good governance and we able to ensure there is a lot of peace and tranquility in the society.

“Our function is enshrined in Section Five of the Police Act of 1965 which basically hovers around maintenance of law, order protection of life and property and preservation of peace.

“Also, to help people who are in need of assistance in time of disasters or help. The Fiji Police Force is empowered by the law to carry out its duties.

“Constitution of our country resembles the universal declaration of human rights. Bill of Rights chapter two provides various rights and freedoms to the citizens of our country” he said.

He said there is a need to make sure that the rights of individuals are balanced by Police powers and responsibility.
