Stop making sincere promises: Chaudhry

Stop making sincere promises: Chaudhry Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has called on politicians not to make sincere promises to people to win their votes.

Chaudhry's comment comes after the People’s Alliance leader Sitiveni Rabuka promised a public holiday to honour sacrifices made by Girmitiyas.

He said Rabuka's promise of a new holiday to honour the sacrifices made by Girmitiyas is akin to adding insult to injury when viewed against the harsh consequences of his coup in 1987.

“It could not simply be a coincidence that the coup took place on the very anniversary of the arrival of the first batch of Girmitiyas into Fiji waters 108 years to that day,” he said.

“His unlawful seizure of power was an outright anti-Indian move, depriving them of their birthright in this country.

“The coup displaced thousands of families, disrupted their lives and left them feeling unwanted in the land of their birth.

“Many fled the country in fear or as a result of the persecution and repression that followed. This was an extremely traumatic experience that has embedded deep scars.

“His recent remarks that Fiji had better prepared those who had left for a more secure life overseas, has not helped him convince Indians to found love for them,” he said.

He said the second insincere promise is from attorney general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum regarding legal land titles to those living in informal settlements or occupying state lands.

“Fiji First made similar promises to people in informal settlements in its campaign for the 2014 and 2018 general elections,” he said.

“They were even issued agreement to lease papers and told that these were as good as a proper lease and they could use it as collateral to borrow from the banks.

“Poor victims found out afterwards that they had been hoodwinked. The so-called “lease papers” were worthless and no bank would lend on it,” he said.
