Coups pulls us back: Narube

Coups pulls us back: Narube Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube says he is amazed that Political leaders have stooped to the low level of comparing coups.

Narube said the people are carrying the huge costs of all coups, the economy would have been much further ahead if there were no coups.

In a statement, he said the comparison of coups is nonsensical, and many of the people of this country should condemn all coups in Fiji.

“A few weeks ago, there was a comparison in Parliament of the coups that Fiji had endured since 1987. The leaders of the 1987 and 2006 coups are not in prison,” he said.

“Those that benefited from the coup of 2006 claimed that their coup was different from 1987 one. We are guessing that the difference was in the motive.

“The 2006 coup leader claimed that he overthrew Laisenia Qarase’s government because the economy was failing badly and there was widespread corruption, on the other hand, we assumed that the 1987 coup was to protect indigenous rights.

“This difference was recently removed when the 2006 coup leader claimed that he overthrew the government with the support of some business people in Fiji.

“If we assume that his claim is correct, then the 2006 coup was for the business people while the 1987 coup was for the indigenous people.

“The 1987 coup leader has now formed his own party with the support of the business people. So, the difference between the two coups is now redundant,” he said.

He said people must always look back so they could ensure not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

He said otherwise they would run a huge risk of repeating the mistake of electing past coup leaders.
