No country immune to deseases: MOH Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says no country in the world is immune to the spread of communicable diseases driven by climate change.

Waqainabete said Fijians needed to be vigilant at all times for the possibilities of outbreak of dengue fever after there have been a recent surge in cases in Singapore.

He said researchers have established a strong relationship between climate variables and vector’s growth, mortality rate, reproduction, including space and time of distribution.

“Epidemiological data further indicated the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases after every single extreme weather event,” he said.

“We are not immune to it. There are multiple drivers of disease emergence, including those associated with environmental, social and demographic changes.

“Thus the need for Fijians to be on alert and to take appropriate actions in preventing the spread of disease as most of these diseases could be avoided.

“Members of the public need to ensure that their surroundings are free of breeding places for vectors,” he said.

He said mosquitoes which breed dengue thrive in stagnant water containing objects like tires, plastic covers, flower pots, pet’s water bowls.
