Minister for Trade, Transport and Tourism Faiyaz Koya says the allocations for shipping services in the 2022-23 National Budget is for government vessels and not for privately owned ones.

This is after Member of Parliament Anare Jale requested to move the motion that the Government should increase the Budget of Shipping Services due to the increase in fuel price.

"Please remember that Goundar Shipping is a private entity. Whether he goes or not goes, that's entirely up to him."

"But when he doesn't go we make sure that it's actually covered. But from what I understand what you're talking about, he didn't go last week he did last week, last week."

"At times whenever there is a situation and I must say this, whenever there is a situation if an operator doesn't go, we ensure that we try and cover that through our Government Shipping services."

Koya said the 2022-23 National Budget sees an increase in the Shipping Services to meet the allocation required in the maritime shipping services.

"If you actually have a look at it, the variance in from the previous year’s it's been increased from $2.28 million to $3.41 million that takes into account the actual fuel costs and the 10 economical routes are not affected."

"So the franchise scheme provides 10 economical routes at 15 trips per month, and the increases will actually cater for those additional costs that he's actually talking about in terms of fuel and maintenance."
