$1m for submarine cable landing in West

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says $1 million has been allocated in the 2022-23 National Budget for a submarine cable landing in the western part of Viti Levu.
Sayed-Khaiyum during the 2022 Prime Minister International Business Awards launch on Friday re-emphasised the importance of another submarine cable landing in Fiji.
"We've allocated a million dollars to look at an alternative site to have an alternative submarine cable land on the western side of Fiji."
"We have now a Southern Cross cable that lends at rifle range in Vatuwaqa and it connects us with Australia, North America."
"But if for example, there is a volcano, like Tonga, and it blows up with submarine cables, we need to have redundancy if we want to go in a big way into the BPO sector."
"The BPO Company needs to feel safe. They need to understand that we actually have alternatives. Those are the types of things that we as a Government are working on behind the scenes, to be able to create a conducive environment for business."
"For you to be able to feel confident for others who are currently not in business, to feel confident."
He also highlighted the importance of foreign investors investing in Fiji which helps in creating more job opportunities for Fijians.
"We have a fantastic opportunity because 70% of the population is below the age of 14. 65% of the population is below the age of 55. So we have a whole cadre of people that we can train."
"We all speak the English language and apparently we have neutral accents. So that's why a lot of visitors want to come to Fiji later and spend millions of dollars that allow young people to get more jobs."
"So these are some natural advantages that we have. We want to do all the work in the background. We want to be able to provide new opportunities. For example, you could have seen that we made an amendment to the illicit drugs act to be able to allow cultivation eventually, probably about this type of industrial hemp and now it's big business and is a great opportunity for us," he added.
