Rise in alcohol related cases: Cawaru

Sep 30, 2022 05:46:33 PM

Permanent Secretary for Employment Osea Cawaru reminded Fijians selected to work in Australia and New Zealand to stay away from alcohol as a growing number of alcohol related cases have recently surfaced and this is concerning.

While farewelling 99 Fijians during their pre-depature briefing in Suva today, Cawaru urged them to work hard and make their families proud.

“My duty on behalf of Government to thank you and wish you the best…and to let you know how important you are to you families, to your communities and to this nation,” he said.

“With the high number of Fijians joining the program, we are also receiving a growing number of alcohol related cases.”

“Please try and refrain from consuming alcohol as nothing good will be achieved from drinking alcohol.”

“Government has no doubt that the return on investment will be worthwhile and will be tenfold,” he added.

With New Zealand borders now open, Fiji is seeing the return of employers to continue providing opportunities for Fijians.

Cawaru said Government is thankful for the assistance provided by the Australian Government in the development of the In-Country Recruitment Database (IRD).

“This should soon reduce the amount of paper work at NEC and hopefully online registration.”

The 99 Fijian workers will join their new employers next month.
