Judges to be on standby for petitions All High Court judges will be on standby in the first week of January to hear any election petitions.

High Court judge Justices Salesi Temo said this in court yesterday when the case of a Chinese national was called before him.

Bi Baodong was produced before Justice Temo on a charge of attempted murder.

It  is alleged that he stabbed the owner of the fishing vessel on which he was living and working.

The matter was called for mention but could not proceed as the translator who was to have attended court to translate the proceedings to Mr Bi did not appear.

Bi's lawyer, Barbara Malimali, asked the court if the matter could be adjourned to Monday so the translator could be present.

Malimali asked if the court could accommodate a trial in the matter during the first week of January.

Justice Temo replied that all High Court judges would be on standby to hear election petitions during that week.

The matter has been adjourned to 10 February, 2023 for mention.

The accused has been further remanded in custody.
