Man charged over electoral offence

Nov 24, 2022 09:12:11 AM

Man charged over electoral offence The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has charged a man with one count of electoral offence.

Rajesh Prasad appeared before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou via skype and has been charged with one count of Non-Interreference In Campaign under Section 111 (1) of the Electoral Act.

It is alleged that on or about 21 November 2022 in Labasa, Prasad hindered the lawful campaign activity of a FijiFirst party candidate, namely Mr Alvick Maharaj, by tearing off both sides of a poster of the FijiFirst party campaign material that was placed on a private property situated in Labasa.

State Counsel Rajiv Pathak informed the court that the first phase of disclosures has been served.

The court has granted Prasad strict bail condition and has warned him not to interfere with witnesses and to report to the Labasa Police Station every Friday.

The matter has been adjourned to 13 January, 2023 for mention.

Also, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has noted an increase in reported cases of political violence and vandalism particularly targeted towards the FijiFirst Party.

In a statement, FICAC said the incidents so far during the 2022 campaign period are more than the incidents reported in the 2014 and 2018 General Elections.

The statement goes on to say that the Commission is working with the Fiji Police Force to ensure a safe environment in which any Independent Candidate, Political Party or Political Candidates can campaign safely and in a lawful manner.
