Police call to closely monitor children

The Acting Assistant Chief of Operations, ACP Livai Driu is calling on parents to strictly monitor their children’s whereabouts during the school holiday.

He made this call in light of an 11-year-old girl, who is the country’s latest drowning victim.

In a statement, police said the victim was swimming with friends in a river in Ra, last Tuesday when the incident happened.

ACP Driu said this was a result of poor or no supervision at all by her parents.

“I am urging all parents to strictly monitor their children’s activities during the holiday.

Police have indicated that a post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow and if investigations find negligence on the part of the guardian, charges will be laid.

The country’s drowning death toll now stands at 42 compared to 34 in the same period last year.
