3 terms, schools to open on 6 Feb

The new school year will commence on 6 February and the Education Ministry today announced that there will be three terms instead of four as earlier announced.

Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro said in the past recent weeks, there have been many developments in Fiji’s political landscape which also heralds in changes through the swearing in of a new Government.

He said teachers are to report to their various schools on 30 January for the resumption of their official duties, while students will begin proper the following week (06 February).

The Minister is also advising all school administrators that those teachers who have turned 55 or to turn 55 this year to remain in employed until they reach 60 years of age.

“This is in line with the 60-year retirement age established by the Coalition Government.”

Radrodro said the Government will continue to provide free education and transportation assistance to all eligible students, as has been the practice.

He said the Ministry will re-engage school chaplains, who will be sent to schools to assist with the spiritual guidance of students.

“The cost of maintaining such school chaplains is expected to be co-shared by the Government.”

The Ministry is however urging School Management to refrain from effecting too many changes given recent developments, and they are encouraged to seek guidance from the Ministry for any clarifications on policy directions.
