Pending glitch report with OAG: FEO

The Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa says her office has yet to receive further updates from the Office of the Attorney-General on the investigation into the ‘glitch’ that occurred during the night of 2022 general elections.

Mataiciwa said that all questions must now go to the Attorney-General or the Office of the Solicitor-General after nothing has been forthcoming from the two offices.

Mataiciwa said there are a lot of theories on the glitch and these theories need to be put to rest.

“We need to resolve these to put it to bed.”

“Right now, not resolving the glitch issue has an impact on their operations, their storage space issues, financial implications, and mistrust from their stakeholders.”

The Fijian Elections Office said that it is willing to assist in the glitch audit by taking a proactive approach in providing all the information required to conduct such an audit.

She said once it’s resolved, they can close this chapter and move on with the preparations for the Local Government Elections and the 2026 General Elections.

Earlier this year, the Electoral Commission expressed its disappointment that the country was still waiting for answers on the glitch that took the country by surprise during the counting of votes in the 2022 General Elections.

EC Chairperson, Barbara Malimali said every day, every week, and every month that we wait for an investigation to be done is costing the country in unnecessary rent as the ballot boxes have to be stored.

Malimali said that the continued delay in finalizing the election audit will have other repercussions.

“Leaving it to the FEO with insufficient time to undertake registration for the municipal elections ” she said.

Malimali said the government wishes to hold in a few months, however this gave  the political parties insufficient time to campaign.

“The implications of this delay are of serious concern to the Commission,” Malimali said.
