Put national interest first, Chaudhry tells Govt

Fiji Labour Party Leader and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry says the leaders of the multi-party Government must consider the national interest ahead of all else.

In his New Year’s message, the veteran politician said fair treatment of all the communities must be the benchmark the leaders should set for themselves in all their decisions.

“It is a blessing which comes after sixteen years of autocratic rule by Bainimarama and Sayed- Khaiyum.”

“They and their collaborators must be held accountable for the injustices and crimes against the nation and humanity committed under their misrule.”

“Justice must not be denied to the victims of their unlawful actions and excesses.”

He said the onus is now on our new Government to set up, as a matter of priority, appropriate machinery and procedures to investigate and decide on all such cases reported to it.

“Only then will our people find confidence in the government and the democratic process that is so crucial to get our beloved nation getting back on its feet,” he said.
