Rabuka elected Prime Minster of Fiji

The Fijian Parliament has elected People’s Alliance Leader Sitiveni Rabuka as the new Prime Minister of the country.

Rabuka was nominated by Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) MP Viliame Gavoka and the nomination was seconded by National Federation Party Leader Professor Biman Prasad.

FijiFirst MP Alvick Maharaj nominated his Party Leader Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama and the nomination was seconded by Inia Seruiratu.

While making his nomination, Maharaj said Bainimarama should be elected the Prime Minister as he received the highest number of votes (136, 829 votes) in the 2022 General Election and his Party also secured the highest number of votes (200, 246 votes) .

Gavoka and Maharaj acted as observers and scrutinized at the count table following a secret ballot voting from the newly sworn-in Members of the Parliament.

Rabuka secured 28 votes while Bainimarama managed to get 27 votes.

The People’s Alliance/ National Federation Party/ SODELPA coalition will now proceed to form Fiji’s next Government.
