Security officers on murder charge remanded

The Magistrates Court in Nasinu has remanded two security officers facing a murder charge and shifted their case to the High Court.

43-year-old Semi Tamanivalu and 25-year-old Leone Matai appeared before Magistrate Lisiate Fotofili in a special sitting each charged with one count each of murder.

The Court was informed that the two accused persons were employed at a supermarket in Suva City area, when they on 4 May 2024 allegedly assaulted the victim after suspecting him of stealing.

The deceased sustained serious injuries from the alleged assault which resulted in his death, as confirmed in a post-mortem examination.

The pair has no previous conviction, and have opted for Legal Aid assistance.

Magistrate Fotofili while transferring the case to High Court due to its serious nature, reminded the accused persons to arrange for their sureties as their bail will be determined when they reappear.

The matter will be called in the High Court on 24 May 2024.
