Selection not based on past 7s experience

Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has made it clear that selection for the national team will be based strictly on current fitness and form, not past accomplishments.

Kolinisau explained that while players like Josua Vakurinabuli and Waisea Nacuqu, who are recognized as a world-class athletes are valued, they must meet the team’s fitness standards to be considered.

“Waisea Nacaqu was dropped because of fitness and I wanted to have a look at other boys as well, and Josh is a world class player but I’ve told him we want to take him but he needs to work on fitness first.”

“We don’t want to base our selection on what players did in the past. There are a lot of youngsters putting their hands up, and I have told the senior boys to understand the standard I want,” he added.

Kolinisau says players are expected to be proactive about their conditioning.

“I am not going to show these boys how to do it. They should know their work ons, and if they really want it, they will have to step up.”

“It’s good to have senior players and their experiences around. It will be great to have them playing on field on game day, but we want to take the best possible side, a fit side,” he concluded.
