Maqala scores in New Year win

A try from Olympic Games gold medalist Sireli Maqala has seen Bayonne come from behind to steal a 23-18 win against Toulon during their French Top 14 clash on New Year’s Day.

Maqala scored the side’s first try on 40 minutes that would begin a second half fight back.

Toulon led 13-7 at halftime after a try to outside centre Dan Paia’aua with Welsh flyhalf Dan Biggar adding a conversion and a penalty.

Maqala’s try was converted by flyhalf Camille Lopez.

Three yellow cards were shown for separate incidents which had Bayonne prop Pascal Coyet and Toulon forwards Brian Alainu’uese and Dany Priso.

Bayonne hooker Facundo Bosch got the ball rolling with a try on 45 minutes with Lopez sealing the win from the boot with a second conversion, two more penalties and a drop goal.

Paia’aua managed a second consolation try for the visitors.
