Blues end 30-year drought, win BOG

Lautoka’s 30-year Battle Of Giants drought ended at Ratu Cakobau Park today as the Westerners defeated Labasa 2-0 in a thrilling final.

Labasa with the backing of a huge fan-base entered the final with the favorites tag while the Blues featured without suspended skipper Peni Finau and injured sweeper Ilaitia Tuilau.

The teams failed to score in normal time despite having some good opportunities at goal.

Lautoka came out stronger in Extra Time and went up in the 4th minute of the first spell through nippy striker Mohammed Shazil Ali who took full use of a defensive mistake and slammed the ball past hapless Labasa goalie and skipper Akuila Mateisuva.

Replacement Cyrus Singh sealed the win for Lautoka midway in the second spell after brilliantly finishing off a throw pass from Valerio Nawatu from the left hand edge of the box.

Lautoka finished the final with only ten players after Nawatu was sent off following his second booking.

Lautoka remained unbeaten in the tournament and received $15,000 while Labasa walked away with $5000 for reaching the semifinals.

The losing semifinalists – Suva and Rewa each received $1000.
