Savusavu wins AFFA BOG

Savusavu won the 2016 Australia Fiji Football Association (AFFA) Battle Of Giants in the weekend after beating Dreketi 3-1 in an exciting final.

Boasting the likes of former Stoke City rep Peter Makrillos and former A-League reps Alex Canak and Jordon Murray, Savusavu sealed its spot in the final after overcoming Suva 5-4 in a high-scoring semifinal while Dreketi defeated Labasa 5-4 in penalties to reach the final.

The tournament featured six teams and Savusavu, Dreketi and Suva were grouped together while Ba, Lautoka and Labasa made up the other pool.

The winners of each pool- Savusavu and Labasa progressed to the semifinals automatically while Dreketi and Suva had feature in a playoff to make the final four.

Savusavu Administrator Moshin Nabi said the standard of games at the tournament was impressive and despite not carrying the favorites tag, they managed to remain unbeaten and win all their matches convincingly.

“We defeated Dreketi 2-1 and Suva 5-2 in pool play and both teams had a lot of former district reps from Fiji while we only had the services of Taufiq Ahmed, Aaron Khan and goalkeeper Mohammed Shafeem.”

“The guest players combined well with our local players and our current form should assist AFFA in selecting the team for Pacific Cup. All the teams have some fine players and we should be able to select a quality team for the upcoming Pacific Cup in Nadi,” added the former Nadroga rep.
