Ba and Nadi progress to semis

Defending champion Ba and last year’s runners up Nadi have sealed their spot in the semifinals of the 2016 Inter District Championship after playing to a 1-1 draw in their last Group B fixture today.

Both teams entered the match with 4 points each and chased a win for better ranking.

While Nadi fielded its strongest possible lineup, the Men In Black opted to rest most of their key players and fielded six bench players including debutant Suliano Tawanakoro who featured well in midfield.

Nadi scored first through lanky marksman Rusiate Matarerega in the 34th minute.

Matarerega climbed over the Ba defence to head in a William Valentine corner kick as Nadi took a 1-0 halftime lead.

Ba leveled scores midway in the second half with impressive midfielder Sitiveni Cavuilagi heading in a Meli Codro corner.

The result booted Rewa out of the tournament. The Delta Tigers also had 4 points and were hoping for Ba to beat Nadi by two clear goals to give them a lifeline.

Ba and Nadi both ended with 5 points each but superior goal difference sees the Imdad Ali coached side on top and Nadi finishes as runners up.
