Labasa makes impressive start

Labasa opened its campaign in the 2016 Courts Inter District Championship (IDC) with an impressive 2-1 win over host Suva at ANZ Stadium tonight.

Suva stunned the Babasiga Lions and went up in the first minute through Sakaraia Naisua who tapped in a corner kick.

A poor clearance from a corner kick allowed Remueru Tekiata to level scores for Labasa in the 19th minute and the teams headed to the break all even.

The second half was exciting as both teams searched for more goals.

Captain Pita Rabo and Nickel Chand missed good chances for Suva while Chris Wasasala and Ilisoni Logaivou were denied by Suva goalie Tevita Koroi.

Stylish marksman Ratu Apenisa Anare scored Labasa’s second and winning goal in the 61st minute after neatly walking past two defenders and placing the ball beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

Suva toiled hard for the equalizer but poor finishing and lack of coordination in midfield and forward play allowed Labasa to hang on till the final whistle.

Propeller Shaft Services sponsored Labasa now leads Group A with three points and will face Lautoka in the feature Day 2 match at 7pm tomorrow while Finance Pacific Suva will meet Nadroga at 3pm.
