Labasa marches into semis

Labasa has progressed to the semifinals of the 2016 Inter District Championship (IDC) after ending its last Group B match 1-1 against Nadroga today.

The Babasiga Lions finished the group stage competition with 5 points with a 2-1 victory over Suva and consecutive draws against Lautoka and Nadroga.

Labasa opted to rest a number of key players in the match while Nadroga fielded its best lineup and looked serious to register a win as they also had a slim chance of progressing but needed a huge margin victory.

A number of missed chances by both teams saw them rest goal-less at halftime.

Midfielder Edwin Sahayam netted Labasa’s goal midway in the second half from a free-kick.

Nadroga drew the match level 12 minutes before fulltime from the penalty spot after striker Paulo Buke was brought down inside the Labasa box. Fiji U20 rep Jeshal Kumar scored from his attempt.

Jonetani Buksh missed two good chances for Nadroga in the dying moments of the match while Ratu Apenisa Anare who came off the bench for Labasa was denied by goalkeeper Pramesh Prasad.

Labasa will now await the outcome of the Suva vs Lautoka match to know its standing in Group A.
