Champs Fiji face NZ in Las Vegas semis

Defending champion Fiji has marched into the semifinals of Las Vegas 7s after convincingly beating Canada 31-12 in the quarterfinal at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Nevada today.

A double from lanky Apisai Domolailai and one try by Kalione Nasoko saw Fiji enjoy a 21-5 halftime lead.

Justin Douglas scored Canada’s lone try of the first half.

Fiji received an injury scare early in the second half with in-form halfback Jerry Tuwai limping off the field after committing himself in a scrum and going down in a tackle.

His replacement Waisea Nacuqu made an instant impact and scored Fiji’s fourth try with a kick and chase effort.

Veteran John Moonlight scored a try to keep the pressure on the Fijians but Joeli Lutumailagi and Samisoni Viriviri combined well to score Fiji’s fifth and final try of the match.

In other quarterfinals, South Africa defeated Australia 17-14, host USA narrowly beat Argentina 21-19 and New Zealand overcame England 19-0.

South Africa will face USA in the first semifinal at 9.44am (Fiji Time) tomorrow while Fiji and arch rivals New Zealand will battle in the second semifinal at 10.06am.
